Many will
remember the
spectacular
production of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Sydney Entertainment
Centre a fair few years back, and for those sitting on the upper
tiers, the play of light on the audience around the stage was simply
awesome. Godspell is different, a very different show.
I saw the
London West
End productions in
the 70's of both the lavish Jesus Christ Superstar and the low-budget
Godspell which ran at the same time. Superstar drew the crowds and
had the media accolades but Godspell has my vote by a long way.
Unforgettable!
It had
practically no
costuming and was
performed on a small stage by a small cast but had abundant energy
and great musical score. It had the audience on its feet and
propelled David Essex to overnight stardom.
The small
team putting
on the show in May/June
here in Sydney is certainly capable of pulling Godspell off
successfully. The cast is the core of the larger group that
magnificently staged “Anything Goes” a couple of years ago which
I thoroughly enjoyed. The standard of this amateur production was
most impressive.
I am very much looking
forward to seeing
this one. You simply shouldn't miss it.
